Mercy Seat

In my daily bible reading, I’ve been reading in Exodus about God’s instructions to the Israelites about building His Temple. One of the things that God has repeatedly had me ponder on is his “mercy seat”. Because God kept calling my attention to this I decided to do a little more digging. The Mercy Seat was the covering above the Ark of the Covenant. The Mercy Seat was where God met man in the Holy of Holies.

"And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the Mercy Seat..." *** Exodus 25:22a

On the day of Atonement each year, God would meet with the High Priest. They would meet at the Mercy Seat in the Holy of Holies. The Priest would bring with him the blood of the sacrifice to atone for all the sins of Israel.

And then, hear the good news are presented by Paul in Romans.

21But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement,[i] through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

What an awesome reminder for me as I dug around in God’s word and online seeking God’s mercy seat. I am reminded that I’ve been there. I’ve had Jesus given as my atonement for sin. Through faith in HIS blood given for me I have atonement.

Incredible. God is always so faithful to give me these reminders when I need them most. Lent is a time of facing the fact that we are sinners and that we all NEED forgiveness. I love that God is giving me reminders like this. That after 40 days and 40 nights (excluding Sundays) in this time of remembering my need for sin, that Easter will arrive and I will all celebrate the atonement made for me through Jesus on that cross and who now sits on Heaven’s Mercy Seat.

I will sing praises to HIM this day. Join me won’t you?
