American Dream

Hubs began a new series at church entitled "Enough".
One of the things he spoke about what the American Dream.
That dream that always leaves us wanting more of everything.....except, maybe, God.

As he preached yesterday, I was reminded of this song.
Thought I would share it here.

{The video won't play on my blog?
It will be worth your time to jump on over and watch it!!}
These are the first lines of the song....

All work no play may have made Jack a dull boy
But all work no God has left Jack with a lost soul
But he's moving on full steam
He's chasing the American dream
And he's gonna give his family the finer things

and then goes on to say.....

He used to say, "Whoever dies with the most toys wins"
But if he loses his soul, what has he gained in the end

I don't know about you, but I want to let God change my inside so I can desire more of HIM and less of these earthly things that tend to become idol's in my life.
Finer things are great but they aren't THE THING!
My focus should be on HIM.
Yesterday was a great reminder.
To focus on him so he can change my inside so I can be HIS light in the world!

Matthew 7:24-27
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great "

Where did the time go?
Yesterday, she was this tiny baby that we dressed in a crocheted outfit that my aunt made for me when I was born.

Yesterday, she was being held in the strong arms of her Daddy.

Yesterday, she was 3 and sitting on a rock getting her picture made.

And yet.
I blinked....

and my first born is twelve. My heart hurts and I want to hyperventilate.  I feel like my time with her is drawing to a close all too quickly.  How can she be twelve?
She's very excited to be twelve.
And in honor of her birthday, here are some things that we love about our beautiful first born daughter.

She is a incredible big sister.
When she isn't fighting with them {just keeping it real},
she's protecting, mothering and taking care of her siblings.

This girl loves snow more than anyone I know.
And she will play in it forever.
Long after every one else is ready to come inside.
She also loves to have hot chocolate when she comes in from the snow.
It's a rule.

She has a sweet tooth.
She loves candy {all kinds}
and pumpkin pie.
And "Better than Ever Cake".

She's  also very responsible.
This girl has been setting her own alarm clock since she asked for a received an alarm clock on her 7th birthday.
She doesn't want us waking her for school.

She loves Ballet.
She's worked hard for years at it
and hopes to be on pointe one day very soon.

She is a loyal friend.
Once she is your friend, she will be good as gold to you.

And those are just a few of the things we love about our girl!

Here we are twelve years later.
We celebrated her twelfth birthday, a couple of weekends ago because her Daddy was going to be out of town on her birthday.
She invited a sweet friend over for a sleepover and we went to Chili's for supper - her choice because they have chips and salsa.
They had movie night when we got home and we ate popcorn and better than ever cake.
We had Krispy Kreme doughnuts for breakfast.   ALL  requested by Miss Sweet Tooth herself.

 Here we are.

Dear Allie,
I can't believe it.  You are twelve.
I really do feel like you were just born yesterday.
And yet, I'm sad because sometimes it seems like a lifetime ago.
I worry because I feel like there isn't much time left with you sweet girl.
I'm going to blink again and you're going to be 18 and off to college.
I know it will be here before I know it.
I really do begin to hyperventilate when I think about it because I don't want that time to arrive.
I feel like there is still so much to tell you, teach you, show you.
Your Daddy and I are so very proud of the person you are.
We both love you with all of our hearts and pray for you every day.
I pray for you as I watch you walk to the bus. Every day, my prayer for you and your sisters is that God will watch over you through out the day and that He would put friends in your path who would continue to lead you toward Him and not away from Him.
I pray that you know how much we love you.
All of us -- your sisters, your brother, Daddy and I.
I pray that you know how much your Savior loves you.
And I pray that you know these things in the very depths of your soul!
Happy Birthday, beautiful girl.

Weekend of Fun, Friends and Fondue

On Friday afternoon, some of our favorite friends arrived at our house.
Kandi, Jenny and I made a beeline for this place as soon as we were all together.
It is one of my favorite restaurants.
AND, there is no better place to enjoy a meal and talk for 3 hours.
Plus, it was customer appreciation month and they were running  a special.

We began our meal with a Wisconsin Trio Cheese Fondue.

So, so yummy!

Next came the salad course and then the Entree's.
We had chicken, shrimp, filet and teriyaki beef.
All so good!!!

We were having a late, late celebration of Kandi's birthday.
Our waiter did well and brought out a special dessert extra.....

Cookies and Cream Chocolate Dream.

Look at all these dippers......

The next morning, we had not talked enough, so we headed out for breakfast.
Such great girl time!!!

My kids LOVE Jenny......
and were sad she had to leave after breakfast that day.

AND, they love her husband Tripp, too.

Who deserves the biggest thanks of all.
He kept all 5 of the children while we girls were hanging out both Friday night and Saturday morning.

After Jenny and Tripp  headed back toward the mountains, the rest of us got ready and headed to Maggie's ballgame.
Love watching her cheer.

Later on Saturday afternoon, we headed to Salsarita's for supper with the kiddo's.
Chips and Salsa all around!

Once we made it back home, it was time to get all the young folk in bed.
On Sunday morning, Kandi wasn't feeling well, so the kids and I got ready and headed to church and left her home to rest a bit.
She was feeling better by the time we made it home from church.
Yesterday was Allie's 12th birthday, so she got to choose where she wanted to eat lunch.
She choose our favorite Italian place, Pomodoro's.
We enjoyed this one last meal together before our friends headed home.

Silly faces......

It was a great weekends with our friends.
For me, it was so nice to be able to catch up with two of my favorite people in the world.
Both Kandi and Jenny are so very special to me and I'm so thankful they made time this weekend to come and visit me.  You probably already know that.  They are mentioned in several posts here on my here and here and here.
My family and I are so very blessed to have them all in our lives.

Life giving Friendship

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art... It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that give value to survival. - C.S. Lewis

About 9 years ago, God brought this sweet friend into my life.  Kristin and her family were new in town and were visiting our church for the first time. To hear her tell it, she saw our church steeple when she was house hunting and knew that God was telling her that she should come to our church.  We were only in that little church for about a year and a half after she moved to town, but in that time I gained a true friend.

I'm so glad that He brought her to our church and into my life. Looking back, I know he brought her there for me.  Her sweet, sweet spirit has been a blessing to me since day one.  We've talked and laughed together, shared life and meals together. We've studied the bible together and gone on retreats together.  We've cried together.  We've been through 4 moves together - 3 for me around Western NC and 1 for her to Colorado.  I was so very sad when she moved to Colorado.  Just knowing she wasn't 3 hours away was so sad to me.   My friend Kristin has such an amazing kindness about her. Just being around her makes me want to be a better person and be as kind and  as genuine as she is.   She brings brightness and happiness where ever she goes!!!  I couldn't just drive down out of the mountains to visit her anymore or have her make a quick trip up to see me.

Thank goodness for Facebook, we've been able to keep up with one another.
She came to NC for  a visit and today, I got to go have lunch with her.  We did a lot of laughing, talking and even  a bit of crying in our short visit today.  She made my day brighter!!

Kristin, I'm so very thankful for you! Thankful to God for bringing you into my life to be my friend.  The quote I put under the picture really  resonated with me today.  Your life giving friendship is so special to me!!!
I love you and can't wait to see you again.  {Hopefully in Colorado}!!

DO you have friends that are life giving to you?
I would love to hear all about them!!

My Instagram Life 10.12.13

It's been a busy week.
But then, that seems to be becoming the normal every week.

Maggie got some money for her birthday  back in August.
She told us she wanted to buy a bow and arrow with it.
 No one really understood.....
Maggie is my girly girl.
She's my cheer leading, glitter and sparkles wearing, girly girl.
We thought she was joking about the bow.
She has been begging for this.
We finally said yes.

She was so excited.

On Sunday, our youth ministry began the fun part of our fundraiser.
Flocking people's yards.
This was our practice run.....

Monday was a teacher work day.
That meant sleeping in and a late big breakfast.
It was wonderful!

Tuesday was seriously the perfect early fall day.
I wore my new boots that I *love*.
And we had yummy taco soup for supper.
I love Fall.
And I love fall days......

My kids woke up on yesterday morning to chocolate chip pumpkin muffins.
They were so excited.
Which made the late night baking completely moment!

My sweet boy and I had a date yesterday.
He told me a while back that he loves hot wings and asked if I could take him to a restaurant to get some.
He explained that our babysitter gave him some to eat one night.
SO, we went to Buffalo Wild Wings.
The waitress was very smart and suggested we get the hot sauce on the side.
He said he loved the hot sauce, but asked for a side of ranch.
I love these dates with my kids because it's when they do some real talking to me.
Brady informed me that when he grows up, he wants to be a cowboy.
He will have 5 horses: Bullseye, Jack, Katie, Boo & Emily.

Tonight, we are celebrating Allie's birthday a week early.
Hubs will be out of town next weekend so we wanted to do something tonight.
She invited her friend over for a sleepover.
We're having a great evening.

OH, and as I was going through my phone to get my instaphoto's, I found these.
This is what happens when they get a hold of my phone. =)

That's what we've been up to?
And you?

This is Who You Are

I've seen this video floating around Facebook for the last few days.

I've had a couple of people even share it with me.

I didn't watch it ----too busy, working, kids, a million excuses.

Tonight I watched.
I'm so glad I did.
I'm adding this on my blog tonight so that those of you who read it may be blessed, and you can in turn share it as a reminder of other girls, and women out there.
I plan to show it to all of my girls tomorrow!
Show this to every girl you know --- no matter their age.
Because this is who YOU are!!!

My Instagram Life 10.4.13

In this race that I call life, it's nice to take a look back at the moments that happen each week.
It's nice to look back and remember the little things that I found worthy of snapping a picture and posting to Instagram.

That's what these are.
Moments in time.
The seconds and minutes that make up our lives.
It's nice to look back and see that they aren't all filled with work.
Here's what we've been up to for the last few weeks.

Our friends, The Walsers, met us to watch Maggie cheer a couple of Saturday's ago.
It was so good to see them.

This little boy had his first soccer game.
The purple Cheetah's did so good.
And #5 scored!!

A trip through Starbucks after a rainy chilly game.
Kid sized hot chocolates all around.

I bought one of those cups from Starbucks.  The one where if you bring it back, you can get refills for $1.
I thought it was a fantastic idea and I could always use another travel cup.
No one told me how thin the plastic was and that it would burn my hands every time I used it.
SO, this was my solution.
Thank you Left Handed Hooker ---- I LOVE it.
and my hand doesn't get burned anymore!

This past Saturday, I went with our youth group to Carowinds.

We left the church at 9AM and the kids rode rides all day long.
About 5:30, we made our way over to Christian Music Day.

We heard a great speaker and saw The Newsboys and Chris Tomlin.
It was a long day.
But, so worth it to worship with these awesome youth and Chris Tomlin!

This girl is loving every minute of cheering this year.
She gets to do this and she is so excited about it!

I worked on my chalkboard for fall.
It sits on my front porch welcoming people.
Got the idea from Pinterest .
I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out!

Today, the kids got out of school at 1pm.
That made it so we could go to a movie as a family. We saw Despicable Me 2.
After the movie, we went to one of our favorite pizza places.  YUM!!

We then went to the mall for a while and walked around.
It was a great family day!!!
SO sweet after such busy weeks is the time we have to just be together.

That's what we've been up to.
How about you?
